- Today: Setting out and safe structure. Our goal: Set out square and understand load paths.
- Take one idea at a time. Pause after each sentence; ask for repetition whenever you need it.
- Every load must have a continuous path to the ground: roof to rafter, rafter to wall plate, wall to foundation, foundation to soil. Break the path and something sags. Set out square with the 3-4-5 method and check the diagonals — equal diagonals mean a true rectangle. Openings need a lintel with adequate bearing each side (usually 150 mm minimum) and structural work needs Building Regulations approval; load-bearing changes need a calculation, not an opinion.
- Together: choose one example from the explanation and show how it works. What do you notice?
- Your turn: Set out a 3 m × 4 m base with 3-4-5 and prove it with diagonals.
- Reflect: what made sense, and what would you like explained differently?
