- Today: Systematic fault diagnosis. Our goal: Diagnose from symptom to root cause.
- Take one idea at a time. Pause after each sentence; ask for repetition whenever you need it.
- Never replace parts hoping. Work the six steps: verify the complaint, gather symptoms and freeze-frame data, list systems that could produce them, test the cheapest decisive check first, isolate by halving the circuit or system, then repair and re-verify under the original conditions. A P0171 lean code is not a sensor fault — it is the ECU reporting that it added fuel; the cause is usually unmetered air, a weak pump or a dirty MAF. Read live data, not just codes.
- Together: choose one example from the explanation and show how it works. What do you notice?
- Your turn: Take one live fault, write the six steps out, and name the decisive test at each branch.
- Reflect: what made sense, and what would you like explained differently?
