- Today: Weimar and the rise of the Nazis. Our goal: Explain how a democracy fell.
- Take one idea at a time. Pause after each sentence; ask for repetition whenever you need it.
- Versailles humiliation, hyperinflation in 1923, then the Depression from 1929 destroyed faith in the Republic. Proportional representation produced weak coalitions; Article 48 normalised rule by decree; elites believed Hitler could be controlled. He was appointed Chancellor in January 1933, not elected directly to that office; the Nazi Party had won major electoral support.
- Together: choose one example from the explanation and show how it works. What do you notice?
- Your turn: Rank the four causes by importance and justify your first choice.
- Reflect: what made sense, and what would you like explained differently?
