- Today: Averages and spread. Our goal: Choose the right average and describe spread.
- Take one idea at a time. Pause after each sentence; ask for repetition whenever you need it.
- Mean adds everything and shares it out — sensitive to one huge value. Median is the middle value once sorted — steady when outliers exist, which is why house prices and salaries are quoted as medians. Mode is simply the most common, the only average that works for words. Spread matters as much as the middle: the range is highest minus lowest, and the interquartile range throws away the extreme quarters to show the honest middle 50%.
- Together: choose one example from the explanation and show how it works. What do you notice?
- Your turn: Take ten household bills. Find mean, median, mode, range and IQR, then say which average is fairest and why.
- Reflect: what made sense, and what would you like explained differently?
