- Today: Reading rocks and time. Our goal: Identify rock types and order strata.
- Take one idea at a time. Pause after each sentence; ask for repetition whenever you need it.
- Igneous rock cools from melt — fast cooling gives tiny crystals (basalt), slow cooling gives big ones (granite). Sedimentary rock is settled fragments cemented in layers, and it is where fossils are most commonly preserved; some fossils can survive low-grade metamorphism. Metamorphic rock is either kind cooked and squeezed until its minerals realign. Read time with three rules: in an undisturbed sequence younger layers lie above older layers, anything that cuts across is younger than what it cuts, and fossils fix relative age.
- Together: choose one example from the explanation and show how it works. What do you notice?
- Your turn: Sketch a cliff face with a fault and an intrusion, and order every event.
- Reflect: what made sense, and what would you like explained differently?
