Full teaching script
  1. Today: Tectonic plates. Our goal: Explain earthquakes and volcanoes by plate boundary.
  2. Take one idea at a time. Pause after each sentence; ask for repetition whenever you need it.
  3. Earth’s lithosphere, the crust and rigid uppermost mantle, is divided into moving plates. At convergent boundaries one plate may subduct, causing earthquakes and sometimes volcanoes. At divergent boundaries plates part and magma may rise. At transform boundaries plates slide past one another, causing earthquakes; this motion does not generally cause volcanism.
  4. Together: choose one example from the explanation and show how it works. What do you notice?
  5. Your turn: Plot five recent quakes and name each boundary type.
  6. Reflect: what made sense, and what would you like explained differently?
