- Today: Plan an imaginary picnic budget. Our goal: Add prices and calculate change within a fixed budget.
- Take one idea at a time. Pause after each sentence; ask for repetition whenever you need it.
- Use an imaginary budget of £10. Fruit costs £2.40, sandwiches £3.60 and water £1.50. Add pounds and pence carefully: 2.40 + 3.60 = 6.00; 6.00 + 1.50 = 7.50. The change from £10 is £2.50. Check by adding 7.50 + 2.50 = 10.00. A budget is a limit, not a reason to judge anyone’s real finances. If an extra snack costs £3, the total becomes £10.50, which is 50p over the budget. Choose a cheaper alternative or leave it out. A lower unit price is only useful if the quantity and need fit. This is a pretend exercise, not advice to buy particular food. Respect allergies and individual food needs in any real activity.
- Together: choose one example from the explanation and show how it works. What do you notice?
- Your turn: Make five pretend price cards. Choose a picnic within £10. Show your addition and change. Swap one item, recalculate and explain your decision. Make a second plan with a £7 budget.
- Reflect: what made sense, and what would you like explained differently?
