- Today: What does a plant need?. Our goal: Identify roots, stem and leaves and describe what plants need.
- Take one idea at a time. Pause after each sentence; ask for repetition whenever you need it.
- Look at the plant picture. Roots anchor many plants and absorb water and minerals. The stem supports the plant and carries substances between its parts. Leaves use light energy to help make sugars from water and carbon dioxide; this is photosynthesis. Plants also need air, suitable temperatures and space. Soil is helpful for many plants but is not their food, and some grow without soil. Model an observation: “I can see green leaves; I cannot see the roots unless the picture shows them.” Do not pull a living plant apart. A wilted leaf can have several causes, so one observation does not prove a plant needs more water.
- Together: choose one example from the explanation and show how it works. What do you notice?
- Your turn: Point to roots, stem and leaves. Draw and label a plant. With an adult, observe the same safe plant on three days and record what changed. Never taste unknown plants.
- Reflect: what made sense, and what would you like explained differently?
