- Today: Fractions of an amount. Our goal: Find a fraction of a quantity using equal groups.
- Take one idea at a time. Pause after each sentence; ask for repetition whenever you need it.
- A fraction names equal parts. In 3/4, the denominator 4 tells us to split the whole into four equal groups; the numerator 3 tells us to take three groups. For 3/4 of 24, divide 24 by 4 to get 6 in each group, then multiply 6 by 3 to get 18. Write the calculation as 24 ÷ 4 × 3 = 18. Check that 18 is less than 24 because three quarters is less than one whole. For 2/5 of 35, each fifth is 7; two fifths are 14. Equal groups matter: splitting 24 into groups of 3, 5, 7 and 9 does not make quarters. A common mistake is dividing by the numerator. Say “split by the bottom, take the top”, but also explain why it works.
- Together: choose one example from the explanation and show how it works. What do you notice?
- Your turn: Model 3/4 of 24 with four groups. Solve 2/3 of 18 together. Then find 3/5 of 40, 5/6 of 36 and 7/8 of 32. Draw one example and check the size of your answer.
- Reflect: what made sense, and what would you like explained differently?
