- Today: Observe, sketch and revise. Our goal: Use shape, line and tone to record an observation.
- Take one idea at a time. Pause after each sentence; ask for repetition whenever you need it.
- An observational drawing begins by looking, not guessing. Notice the outline and break it into simple shapes. A cup may have an oval opening and curved sides. Sketch lightly so you can revise. Tone means lightness or darkness; compare the brightest and darkest areas before shading. A darker mark is not always an outline: it may be a shadow. Model looking at the object, making one mark and checking again. There is no single correct artistic style, and neat handwriting is not required. Revision is part of making art, not evidence of failure.
- Together: choose one example from the explanation and show how it works. What do you notice?
- Your turn: Choose a safe object. Make a quick outline, then add three tones. Compare it with the object and revise one part. Explain a choice rather than rating whose drawing is best.
- Reflect: what made sense, and what would you like explained differently?
