  1. Today: Animal first response and welfare. Our goal: Apply the five welfare needs and triage.
  2. Take one idea at a time. Pause after each sentence; ask for repetition whenever you need it.
  3. UK law sets five needs: suitable environment, suitable diet, ability to express normal behaviour, appropriate company, and protection from pain, suffering, injury and disease. In an emergency, triage as ABC: airway, breathing, circulation — check gum colour and capillary refill (under two seconds is normal). Control bleeding with direct pressure, keep the animal warm and still, muzzle safely only if not vomiting or in respiratory distress, and phone ahead so the practice is ready.
  4. Together: choose one example from the explanation and show how it works. What do you notice?
  5. Your turn: Practise a capillary-refill check and write a one-page emergency plan for your animal.
  6. Reflect: what made sense, and what would you like explained differently?
