- Today: Threat models and defence in depth. Our goal: Build a practical personal threat model.
- Take one idea at a time. Pause after each sentence; ask for repetition whenever you need it.
- Security is not a product, it is a set of trade-offs against a named adversary. Write down four things: what you protect, who wants it, how capable they are, and what happens if they win. Then layer defences so no single failure is fatal: unique passwords in a manager, hardware or app-based second factor (SMS is the weakest), full-disk encryption, prompt patching, least privilege on every account, and offline backups you have actually restored from. Phishing beats cryptography almost every time, so the human layer — slow down, verify out of band — is the one that pays most.
- Together: choose one example from the explanation and show how it works. What do you notice?
- Your turn: Write your own threat model on one page and fix the weakest layer this week.
- Reflect: what made sense, and what would you like explained differently?
